Gene Therapy Pros And Cons
|
Although the many benefits of gene therapy have been known, there is still a furious ongoing debate on whether the benefits outweigh violating moral codes. Gene therapy has been in the headlines for years now and there is no end in site. Gene therapy absolutely is the key to solving many mysteries about genetic disorders and potentially can help to develop cures. On the other end of the spectrum, there are a lot of people who think that gene therapy is nothing more than 'playing God'. Even still, a number of people are torn between the two. These people believe that gene therapy is a good idea only if strictly regulated using specific techniques only. Gene therapy pros and cons are not clearly defined in black and white. Scientists have every right to utilize methods which can save lives and cure diseases. Religious persons also have every right to deem tampering with nature as wrong and potentially changing the order of nature. A negative aspect of gene therapy includes the it is still largely uncharted territory. Most of the science behind it depends on theories and ideas rather than solid facts. There have been cases of injuries and even death from the development of gene therapy. Of course, this method has only been around since the 1970s, but much more time will be needed to fully understand it. Then there is the subject of stem cells. Stem cells can be harvested from living human being, but embryonic stem stems come from deceased fetuses. This can make most feel uneasy and others outraged. There is the argument that the fetuses would be better used in research rather than left intact, but for religious people this is wrong on many levels.
There are also many benefits available from the development of stem cell research. Genetic diseases can be debilitating, painful and deadly. Many families have fears that existing conditions will continue to be passed on to future generations. Gene therapy offers these people the hope that hereditary disorders will one day be eradicated. People with existing conditions also may benefit from current and future developments in the research of gene therapy. Gene therapy is the only existing option for one day curing and preventing future genetic disorders. |
